MOORHEAD, Minn. (KFGO) – Clay County officials got their first “inside” glimpse of the new correctional facility and law enforcement center Friday. The $52 million project replaces the current jail, now the oldest county jail in Minnesota.

Clay County Commissioner Jenny Mongeau was among those who toured the site. Mongeau says the state-of-the-art facility will provide decades of service and eliminate the need to spend more than $1 million each year to transport and house inmates in other facilities.

“This is really a great investment in the county in terms of how much we’re paying in staff time and transport time” Mongeau said. “We’re on track and on budget.”

The new jail will have more than 200 beds. Money for the project is coming from a half-cent county sales tax.

Clay County Administrator Brian Berg says construction is on schedule and expected to be completed next fall.
